The fruitful collaboration between choreographer Matteo Levaggi and visual artist/performer Samantha Stella - Sublime Gentleness (Financial Times) -, resulted in the founding of the duo Matteo Stella Dance Arts in 2019, after working together at the Museo Madre in Naples on a project initiated by the Fondazione Donna Regina per le Arti Contemporanee and The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation New York. Their next chapter is a work shared with Karole Armitage - The Punk Ballerina (Vanity Fair) - and Richard Move - Best Dance 2021 (The New York Times).
Untitled New Work is divided into three parts: the first movement is signed Karole Armitage. The second movement features the signature and onstage presence of Richard Move, while the third movement is signed and performed by Matteo Stella Dance Arts.
The starting point of the new creation is Empty Words, one of John Cage's most incisive works, created in 1974. Seated, John Cage speaks and creates sonorities using phrases, letters and sounds, which fundamentally deconstruct Thoreau's original philosophical text making it almost incomprehensible.
Armitage, Move and Matteo Stella Dance Arts worked on an initial study of Untitled New Work in a week-long residency during March 18-22, 2024 at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts | Dance. The artists shaped an initial material documented by a video made by Stella, with the intention of creating an evening length work.
Karole Armitage collaborated with Megan LeCrone, soloist with New York City Ballet, and Lucy Stewart, dancer with Complexions Contemporary Ballet in New York City. The duo performs an uncanny, punk minimalist dance to the music of Tony Conrad. An example of strength, freedom and resilience reminiscent of the perseverance demonstrated by Cage in his 1977 performance of Empty Words at the Teatro Lirico in Milan, continually disrupted by the audience. Included in the scene are the Matteo Stella Dance Arts duo and Richard Move, in a reference to Armitage's historic ballet The Watteau Duets.
Prompted by radical, performative speech and curiosities of Italian politics (from an American perspective), Richard Move created a new performance based on his speech inspired by La Cicciolina’s popular radio show, political speeches, and songs of her recording career. Still politically active, Ilona Staller a.k.a Cicciolina, launched her Democracy, Nature and Love party in 2020, partly to protest pension cuts, including her own. Move is joined by the two dancers Matthew Mancuso and Fernando Trinidad performing to the intense music by Anohni. Again a reference to The Watteau Duets performed directly by Karole Armitage.
The Matteo Stella Dance Arts duo, interested in the state of Art in all its languages, has conveived a performance on the dark sounds of Nico (after her New York experience with The Velvet Underground), the suggestive ambience of Nero Kane and the compositional avant-garde of Luciano Berio. For the study created in New York, the duo is joined by the New York City Ballet Soloist Megan LeCrone in white original Balanchine robes, a symbol of the purity of Art. The deconstruction of the classical dance vocabulary in her movements is a process similar to that applied by John Cage to Thoreau's text in Empty Words. Also, the stillness of the bodies, in apparent antithesis to the moving bodies, recalls the Cagean relationship between silence and sound. Opening the pièce is a cameo by Armitage and Move, who play Stella and Levaggi themselves.

La fertile collaborazione tra il coreografo Matteo Levaggi e l’artista visiva/performer Samantha Stella - Sublime delicatezza (Financial Times) - si è consolidata con la nascita del duo Matteo Stella Dance Arts, grazie ad una creazione del 2019 per il Museo Madre di Napoli voluta dalla Fondazione Donna Regina per le Arti Contemporanee e The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation New York.
Il loro prossimo capitolo sarà un’opera condivisa con Karole Armitage - The Punk Ballerina (Vanity Fair) - e Richard Move - Best Dance 2021 (The New York Times).
Untitled New Work è suddiviso in tre performance: il primo movimento è firmato da Karole Armitage, il secondo movimento vede la firma e la presenza in scena di Richard Move, mentre il terzo movimento è firmato dal duo Matteo Stella Dance Arts, anch’esso direttamente in scena.
Il punto di partenza per questa nuova creazione è Empty Words, una delle opere più incisive di John Cage, creata nel 1974: John Cage, seduto, parla e crea sonorità utilizzando frasi, lettere e suoni che di base destrutturano l’originale testo filosofico di Thoreau rendendolo pressochè incomprensibile.
Armitage, Move, Levaggi e Stella hanno lavorato ad un primo studio di Untitled New Work in una settimana di residenza nel periodo 18-22 marzo 2024 presso la New York University - Tisch School of the Arts | Dance. Gli artisti hanno dato forma a un primo materiale documentato da un video realizzato da Stella, con l’intento di creare un’opera a serata intera.
Karole Armitage ha collaborato con Megan LeCrone, solista del New York City Ballet, e Lucy Stewart, danzatrice del Complexions Contemporary Ballet di New York. Il duo esegue un'inquietante danza minimalista e punk sulla musica di Tony Conrad. Stimolato da un discorso radicale e performativo, e dalle curiosità sulla politica italiana (da una prospettiva americana), Richard Move ha creato una nuova performance basata su un suo speech ispirato al popolare programma radiofonico di Ilona Staller, alias Cicciolina, ai suoi discorsi politici e alle canzoni della sua carriera discografica. Ancora attiva politicamente, Cicciolina ha lanciato il suo partito Democrazia, Natura e Amore nel 2020, in parte per protestare contro i tagli alle pensioni, compresa la sua. Accanto a Move si affiancano i due danzatori Matthew Mancuso e Fernando Trinidad sulle intense musiche di Anohni. Anche qui un rimando a The Watteau Duets performato direttamente da Karole Armitage.
Il duo Matteo Stella Dance Arts, interessato allo stato dell’Arte in ogni suo linguaggio, ha concepito una performance sulle sonorità oscure di Nico (dopo l'esperienza newyorkese con The Velvet Underground), le atmosfere suggestive di Nero Kane e l'avanguardia compositiva di Luciano Berio. Per lo studio creato a New York, è in scena con Megan LeCrone, solista del New York City Ballet, che indossa un bianco costume originale del repertorio di Balanchine, simbolo della purezza dell’Arte. La destrutturazione del vocabolario della danza classica nei movimenti sulle punte della danzatrice è un processo simile a quello applicato da John Cage all’originale testo di Thoreau in Empty Words. Inoltre, l’immobilità dei corpi, in apparente antitesi con i corpi in movimento, richiama la relazione cageana tra silenzio e suono. In apertura della pièce, un cameo di Armitage e Move che interpretano gli stessi Stella e Levaggi.
